Chapter 39 The Lawyer

Destiny's Dominion · 第三十九章 律师

On a small high-rise about three hundred and seventy meters from the scene, Jeremy Burt held a military telescope, his eyes shocked as he watched the scene in the alley.

"What am I seeing? The Swift Wind Knight from the comics? Is he really a third-rank magic-energy swordsman?"

"Fourth rank! My infrared thermal imager tells me he didn't use power beyond the fourth rank."

The one who responded was another middle-aged man holding an instrument like a large video camera: "Windwalk pushed to the extreme, body control refined to a hair's breadth, excellent force application, the conflict between two extreme forces within his body—these created the miracle before our eyes."

"Incredible! A sixteen-year-old boy actually possesses such strength! He's a genius; I've never seen anyone like him."

This was a young woman, also wearing desert camouflage: "I feel even a seventh-rank magic-energy professional might not be his match. Oh, damn! He spotted us. How did he do it? At this distance, through mirror reflection? Impossible—I've treated all of those."

"Then stop. He's a violent little fellow; I think it's best not to provoke him. It's clear he's very displeased with our intrusion."

Jeremy Burt, true to his word, put away his telescope. "I only care—did we record the footage?"

"Of course. Three devices—high-magnification camera, infrared thermal imager, electromagnetic imaging detector—all have complete recordings."

The young woman replied affirmatively: "What do you plan to do next? Keep watching, or report to Nathan Sports Group?"

"The latter. I think further observation is pointless. Tomorrow afternoon's fight won't reveal his true strength, but this footage will. They wanted our detective agency to give an answer quickly, didn't they? I think this is enough."

Jeremy smiled slightly and stood up: "Pack up and get ready to go back. Lucky this time—less than four days, and fifty thousand gold shields are in hand. Maybe we'll even get some extra income."

The burly middle-aged man carrying the large instrument shrugged and grumbled as he stood up: "I think it's better to watch for another week or two, but I'll follow your lead, boss. I hope Nathan Sports Group will be satisfied with our findings."

Inside the alley, after Li Mochen felt the gazes fixed on him disappear, the killing intent in his eyes gradually faded.

Then he looked at the few unconscious fellows before him, a hint of regret in his eyes.

Originally, he had planned to take their money and guns—the former being something he urgently needed, never too much; the latter, he wanted to try modifying guns himself.

But since there were witnesses, doing so would be inappropriate. His earlier actions were self-defense, but if he took their belongings, it would be suspected as robbery. Though he likely wouldn't be convicted, it would still leave some hidden risks.

So Li Mochen could only regretfully chop the three guns into pieces, then wipe the blood from his sword on their clothes.

Notably, when Li Mochen's gaze fell on the residual blood on the blade, a crimson tint reappeared in his eyes, along with a trace of satisfaction. At that moment, he once again felt an extremely violent, almost uncontrollable urge to continue beating these fellows and see more blood.

Li Mochen knew what this was—his current violent and bloodthirsty impulses were being magnified without limit.

Fortunately, the 'Ice-Blood Stone Necklace' on his chest helped suppress these unwanted thoughts, even without entering the state of divine illumination.

Appropriately yielding to the original owner's desires aids the fusion of their souls, but 'yielding' does not mean indulgence.

If he really did that, it might come true as Dugu Tianyi said—'You will surely sink into endless desires, and this demon will be reborn from your corpse.'

At this time, faint footsteps could be heard nearby. Li Mochen guessed it was either the police arriving or members of the Teutonic Cross. Unwilling to invite more trouble, he immediately put his sword back into its bag and hurriedly left the alley.

After that, he encountered no further incidents and took the bus back to Vagrant Street without a hitch.

Just as Li Mochen returned to the dilapidated apartment, the old gatekeeper, the drunkard Thor, called out to him tipsily: "Hey, kid! Two people came looking for you yesterday. They left you a letter; you can check your mailbox. Little guy, I think you might be in luck. Those two were wearing expensive suits, probably from the upper north district, and eight times out of ten they were lawyers."

Li Mochen opened the mailbox as instructed and found a lawyer's letter inside.

"Cargill Law Firm?"

Li Mochen's eyes flickered with doubt. Cargill Law Firm was the legal advisor for the original owner's father, handling all legal matters for their family and company.

But hadn't the inheritance distribution been settled already? Could it be that their family's property had been sold? Even so, the law firm shouldn't be the one to notify him.

With a puzzled expression, Li Mochen opened the lawyer's letter and carefully read its contents.

Somewhat unexpectedly, Jennifer Wiltenstein had renounced her inheritance rights, so naturally, the half of the shares that should have gone to his half-sister now fell to him.

The people from Cargill Law Firm had come to consult his wishes and invite him to visit the Black Star Building soon, which was where the law firm was located.

Li Mochen fell into deep thought, wondering if the company's situation was so bad that Jennifer chose to give up? Or did his sister simply detest everything their father owned?

He needed to visit Cargill Law Firm, but before that, he had to first understand the company's situation.

The original owner had been focused on his studies and magic-energy cultivation, knowing little about the company's state—almost completely ignorant.

The information he had so far was insufficient to help him make a decision.

As Li Mochen pondered, he put the lawyer's letter into his pocket. When he returned to his room, he found it had been broken into again—by more than one group.

Li Mochen's forehead creased with dark lines. He thought that this Saturday, the first thing he needed to do was not find a new job but quickly find a better, safer residence. He had to move out of here as soon as possible, even if it cost more money.

What did those guys take his room for—a hotel?

When Li Mochen opened the refrigerator, his mood worsened. The thieves had taken all his food for the week. With no choice, he had to go out again.

Annoyingly, the nearest fast-food restaurant was two blocks away.
