Chapter 005: Prison Break
获得主角能力的我只想过平凡生活 · 第005章 越狱
O'Connor was escorted away by soldiers. Not long after, a group of prison guards walked in, opened the cell doors, and herded all the prisoners out to the corridor outside the prison, including Wang Bo.
The corridor railings were all sealed with iron grilles, so no one could escape from here.
However, all the prisoners could see through the iron bars the circular exercise yard, and in the center of the yard, the extremely conspicuous gallows.
It was obvious that the warden had placed the gallows here precisely to intimidate all the prisoners.
And making all the prisoners come to the corridor was to let them watch the moment a prisoner was hanged.
Kill the chicken to scare the monkey!
Now, Rick O'Connell is that chicken.
On the circular parade ground, escorted by two soldiers, O'Connor stepped onto the gallows step by step. He walked very slowly; to be honest, he had no desire to mount the gallows at all.
But the situation was dire now; he was not his own master.
The gallows was surrounded on all sides by soldiers with guns; if he dared to flee, the next second he would be riddled with a hail of bullets. So now, O'Connor could only pray.
Praying that the woman named Evelyn could save herself.
“Do you have any last words now?”
When O'Connor stood in the center of the gallows, the soldier carrying out the execution placed the noose around his neck and, as was customary, asked a question.
“Yes!” O'Connor showed a strong will to survive. “Lower the rope and let me get out of here.”
The soldier was completely bewildered; it was the first time he had heard such a last wish. He turned his head to the warden on the viewing stand and said, "He says to let go and leave."
The warden roared in exasperation, "Impossible! Carry out the execution!"
The next second, the soldier moved the mechanism, and O'Connell dropped from the gallows, eliciting gasps from the surrounding prisoners.
Fortunately, O'Connor did not break his neck the moment he fell.
In fact, when many prisoners are hanged, the moment they fall from the gallows, their necks are snapped, and they die instantly.
Only a very few people could escape this calamity, and O'Connor was clearly one of them.
But this also made him suffer a great deal.
Watching yourself slowly suffocate, yet being powerless to break free, is absolutely not an easy thing.
The cruel hanging provoked a massive riot among the prisoners. Many grabbed the iron bars and roared at the warden, and some prisoners in the yard even attempted to rush forward to rescue O'Conner.
But they were quickly subdued by soldiers holding long spears.
Of course, there were also some prisoners who, far from finding the hanging cruel, were whistling and cheering loudly.
Wang Bo watched this scene with calm eyes, a stark contrast to the unbearable and cruel gazes of the surrounding prisoners, for he knew full well that O'Connor would not die by hanging.
Sure enough, before long, Wang Bo heard the prison warden roar: "Let him down."
According to the plot, the deal with Evelyn has now been made.
Upon receiving the order, the soldier dared not delay, drew a long blade, and cut the rope.
O'Connor was thus saved.
However, what happened next had nothing to do with Wang Bo. The prisoners, having lost their spectacle, were herded back into the prison by the guards, and Wang Bo was no exception.
And O'Connor himself never returned to the prison. Barring any accidents, the man should have already left this place.
And Wang Bo was still waiting.
Slowly, the sky darkened.
Wang Bo, inside the prison, looked at the night sky outside the small window and let out a deep sigh.
To tell the truth, he was homesick.
He missed the bed at home, the dinner at home, the air at home—everything. But unfortunately, he could not go back.
He wasn't quite sure which bastard had sent him to Cairo in 1926, but he was very clear that prison was not where he belonged.
He should leave here, go to Hamunaptra with O'Connell and the others, and then, at the critical moment, prevent Evelyn from reciting the incantation and resurrecting Imhotep.
Only in this way could he survive.
As long as the ten plagues do not descend and Imhotep does not resurrect, Wang Bo fears nothing.
He could even take some of the gold from Hamunaptra, sell it to obtain a large sum of money, and then live a wonderful life in this world.
Although there were no computers in this world yet, Wang Bo believed that as long as he had money, he could still live well.
At least there's no need to worry about being at odds with the world.
Even if one accidentally reveals formidable power, it can be covered up with the power of money.
In a certain sense, this world was even more suited for Wang Bo's survival than the original one.
However, all of this must be based on the premise that Wang Bo can leave the prison.
Unconsciously, the time slipped to around three in the morning—the hour when people are sleeping most soundly, also known as the golden sleep period.
Wang Bo stood up and tiptoed to the cell door.
The iron bars of the cell door were fastened with an iron chain, but this did not trouble Wang Bo. He grabbed the chain and yanked it hard several times, unleashing a terrifying force of two tons, snapping the chain with a crisp clang.
The prisoners in a few cells were startled.
After hearing the sound, they opened their eyes, climbed up from the haystack, and looked around, but Wang Bo returned and lay down on the haystack, pretending to sleep.
After a while, this group found nothing and went back to sleep one after another.
No one would have thought that the sound just now was that of an iron chain being snapped. In their experience, humans were not strong enough to break an iron chain.
Only someone as non-human as Wang Bo could accomplish this.
After everyone had fallen asleep again, Wang Bo quietly got up, removed the iron chain, opened the cell door, and tiptoed out.
The exit of the prison was an iron door, locked.
Wang Bo looked around carefully, and after confirming that no one was nearby, he gave a hard tug and pulled the iron door open.
The iron doors of this era were extremely crude, far inferior to modern security doors.
Wang Bo pulled the iron door open with a little force.
But this time, the sound alarmed everyone in the prison—not only the inmates, but even the guards were startled.
"What, what happened?"
"What sound, where did it come from."
Wang Bo heard someone shouting loudly. He dared not be negligent; he fixed his eyes on a direction and took off running. At this moment, he exerted almost all the strength he had, his legs churning as fast as a gust of wind.
In just a few breaths, Wang Bo's speed broke through over forty meters per second, approaching the fifty-meter mark.
The others saw Wang Bo only as a black shadow flickering before their eyes, and then they lost track of him.
By the time they realized what had happened, Wang Bo had already disappeared into the night.
